The Ultimate Hoarding Duo

If you follow my instagram you know that we have made some minor changes to our home over the last 6 months.  I shed some major tears when we purged and declutter’ed our kitchen and I had to get rid of the 9 million sippy cups (that were truly never spill proof) and replaced them with water bottles for volleyball practices.  Well the purging continued into closets and then eventually led to dressers and while we have soooo much more to do we made some legit progress y’all!  You see here is the thing daddy cheeks and I are the ultimate hoarder combination, he saves everything and I mean EEEEEVVVERYTHING and I tend to “put stuff” in nooks and crannies and voila they disappear, which leads to buying said “stuff” again and then putting in another nook and then buying again….you see the vicious cycle there?!  YALL IT’S NO GOOD!  I mean for real, raise your hand if you own 4, not 1 not 2 but FOUR air mattress blower uppers!  GUYS WE DON’T EVEN OWN FOUR AIR MATTRESSES!

A Weekend Wild Hair

SO we eventually made some serious progress in the girls rooms and then it was like the heavens opened and I could see the space and every drawer clearly!  It was at that moment that I realized that my poor child has had the same comforter that she got when she turned 18 months and crawled out of her crib and I bought her a big girl bed….let me repeat that for those of you in the back…YOU GUYS, she had the same comforter and bedding that I bought her when she moved out of her crib…almost 10 years ago!  So we started talking…what do you like? what do you want?  hey let’s paint the walls!  Here tween answers in order

unicorns but not baby unicorns elegant ones, and a canopy

GOLD AND PURPLE

no mommy I do not want to paint over my stripes that daddy ( my favorite person in the universe) slaved over when we moved here 7 years.

okay okay fine we won’t paint insert my best tween eye roll at her, but lets decorate your room!  right now, today!

Purple is Not the Easiest Color to Find

So let me tell you, if you have a tween that likes purple you are pretty much screwed!  There is no pretty purple bedding or non goth bedding or non little girly nursery bedding in purple!  Period.  So we decided on various shades of purple lavender polka dotted sheets and gold ones from Pottery barn teen and lots of white!  Lot’s of white, gold and silver with purple accents, so her decision to not paint over those stripes was actually in my favor.  We poured over magazines and spend a few hours checking gifs rooms on pinterest and i felt pretty confident I nailed down her style pretty quickly.  I headed to Target and ordered a few things on amazon and voila done in one afternoon!

One Thing Is Still Missing

We have a hanging chair, because what tween doesn’t want a hanging reading chair in her room?!  but we haven’t had a moment to hang it!  I’ll be sure to post when we get it up because it’s seriously the cherry on top to the cutest purple tween room ever!  I mean If y’all remember decorating is like my Achilles heel so I am pretty proud of myself!

The Gallery Wall

So let me give you a few quick DO’s and Don’t for creating a gallery wall

  1. DO Pull out every possible thing you think goes or coordinates in the space
  2. DO mix and match frames
  3. DO use your own art and prints.  You see that gorgeous watercolor prints on the bottom?  Her sister ran down stairs and painted that as a new room gift!  yep watercolor paper and a frame and then masterpiece!
  4. DO NOT feel restricted to perfectly balanced or geometric wall galleries.  clearly this is not a perfectly squared off gallery wall and yet it’s still feels like it all fits and works on the wall
  5. DO NOT be afraid of dimension.  That Unicorn head legit made her cry when we revealed the room to her!  I saw it in hobby lobby and knew instantly she needed it but I had no clue where it was going ha until I started working on this wall
  6. DO lay every item out on the floor and see what it actually looks like before you start putting holes in your walls.  In fact I actually trace each item on brown kraft paper (i have this giant roll right here) and then actually tape them to the wall, then you can leave the kraft paper on the wall and put your nail right through it to ensure you get everything exactly where you wanted it.
